The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
