Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
