The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Haze After Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" level.
Alarming Air Quality Levels
Several parts of the capital recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the healthy threshold established by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing fifteen to twenty times above safe levels.
Fireworks Prohibition and New Developments
Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly pollution that covers the city as colder weather approaches.
However earlier this year, the newly elected city leadership petitioned the supreme court to request a easing of the ban.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Legal Ruling and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during limited hours throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Several air quality sensors throughout the capital registered pollution spiking around late evening to extremely hazardous readings observed during the festival in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Effects
The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing declining air quality in Lahore on contaminants traveling from neighboring India following the events.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the city have continued as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Around celebratory seasons, the levels of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to 70% higher the worst levels ever documented in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
The situation in the city is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.
Public Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to multiple studies.
The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k premature deaths each year in the city.
